First Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. A Service for the Lord’s Day Palm Sunday April 5th, 2009, 11:00 a.m. * Indicates that those who are able may stand. Bold type is spoken by the people.
VOLUNTARY “The Palms” J. Fauré Paul Thurmond, Organist (Please sign and pass the registers)
CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 118) Rev. Erin Angel O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. God’s steadfast love endures forever. Let all who fear the Lord say it together. God’s steadfast love endures forever.
*OPENING HYMN “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” Hal H. Hopson
Choirs: Open the doors; open them wide that the King may now enter. This King now comes to save us. Who is the King? He’s the Lord, strong and mighty. Hosanna!
All: REFRAIN All glory, laud, and honor, to thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
Thou art the king of Israel, thou David’s royal Son, Who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and Blessed One. REFRAIN
The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; Our prayer and praise and anthems before thee we present. REFRAIN
Choir: To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise. To thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise.
All: REFRAIN Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King. REFRAIN
Almighty God, hear us as we confess our sin. Even as your Son entered the city to shouts of praise, you knew he was on his way to the cross. You knew that the same people calling him king would call for his crucifixion. Help us to recognize that we are those people, constantly changing our minds and our hearts. Forgive us, and grant us the strength to carry these palm branches, not merely in our hands but in our hearts, as symbols of your Son’s suffering and sacrifice. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
*RESPONSE : HYMN NO. 572 “Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us”
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from Psalm 118) I was pushed hard and I was falling. But in my need, the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my might. The Lord has become my salvation.
*Gloria Patri, p. 579 Matt. 28:19 Words, NY American Melody Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates” Peter Niedmann
Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates; behold the King of glory waits! The King of kings is drawing near; the Savior of the world is here.
O blest the land, the city blest, where Christ the ruler is confessed! O happy hearts and happy homes to whom this King of triumph comes!
Fling wide the portals of your heart; make it a temple, set apart From earthly use for heaven’s employ, adorned with prayer and love and joy.
Redeemer come! I open wide my heart to thee; here, Lord, abide! Let me thy inner presence feel: thy grace and love in me reveal.
So come, my Sov’reign; enter in! Let new and nobler life begin; Thy Holy Spirit guide us on, until the glorious crown be won.
