LIGHTING THE THIRD CANDLE OF ADVENT                                     Marge & Eliseo Rios

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world – John 1:9

We light these candles as a sign of the coming light of Christ.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people–John 1:1-4

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE:       Candle Carol                                                K. Lee Scott

First time: Choir; Second time: All

*OPENING HYMN NO. 13                   Prepare the Way

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION                                                                Chris McCormick, Liturgist

God of the poor and oppressed, you offer deliverance to the poor and salvation to the faithful, but we often stand in the way. You send us a savior but we worship idols. We have so much and still we want more. Forgive us when we complain while millions go homeless and hungry, while captives yearn for freedom, while those who mourn wait for comfort. Help us to hear your voice and see your vision, that we might join in glad adoration. In the name of the one who is coming soon, Jesus, the Christ. Amen.

*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572      Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from Micah 5)

From the tribe of Judah will come the great ruler.

When she who is in labor has delivered, he will tend the flock.

And the people will live securely throughout the earth.

By the strength of the Lord, we will be ruled in peace. Amen.

*Gloria Patri, P. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel.

Jesus, the Light of the world!

Come, my light, and illumine my darkness.

Come, my life, and revive me from death.

Come, my physician, heal my wounds.

Come, come, Jesus, the light of the world.

Come, flame of divine love, and burn up the thorns of my sins,

Kindling my heart with the flame of thy love.

Come, my king, sit upon the throne of my heart.

Come and reign in my heart.

For thou alone art my king and my lord.

Come, come, Jesus, the light of the world.
