CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 97)

       The Lord is king. Let the earth rejoice.

       The heavens proclaim God's righteousness.

       Zion hears God’s voice, the people of Judah rejoice.

       Light dawns for the righteous and joy for the upright.

*OPENING HYMN NO. 31         Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of unending love and mercy, we have celebrated the gift of your precious Son, but we have not loved as you have loved. We don’t always place nice with other children. We don’t always share our toys and sometimes we even fight over them. We often take more than we should and play keep away from our sisters and brothers. Forgive us when our fears overcome your joy in our lives. Help us to recognize your generous spirit and to let that spirit grow within our hearts. Encourage us to run to you, seeking your grace. In the name of Jesus Christ, who brings us light and life. Amen.

*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572      Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

            Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from Psalm 97)

The Lord loves those who hate evil

The Lord guards the lives of the faithful.

The Lord rescues the faithful from wickedness.

            Rejoice in the Lord and give thanks to God’s holy name.

*Gloria Patri, P. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

            As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

ANTHEM                                       All My Heart Again Rejoices                   Michael Burkhardt, arr.

All my heart again rejoices

As I hear, far and near, sweetest angel voices;

“Christ is born,” their choirs are singing,

Till the air ev’rywhere now with joy is ringing.

Hark! A voice from yonder manger,

Soft and sweet, does entreat: “Flee from woe and danger;

Come and see; from all that grieves you

You are freed; all you need I will surely give you.”

Come, then, let us hasten yonder;

Here let all, great and small, kneel in awe and wonder;

Love him who with love is yearning;

Hail the star that from far bright with hope is burning.

SCRIPTURE READING                            John 1:1-14

                                    And also with you.  (A time of greeting)

            Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love:

            The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
