A
Service for the Lord’s Day
The
Second Sunday of Advent
December 6, 2009,
11:00 a.m.
* Indicates that those who are able may
stand. Bold type is spoken by the people.
A THOUGHT FROM
JOHN CALVIN: “John shows remarkable firmness, in that those who
were highly esteemed were not spared on account of their reputation;
and so all godly instructors ought to be zealous and not fear any
human power.”

LIGHTING THE
FIRST CANDLE OF ADVENT Sam
& Diane Glasgow
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was
coming into the world – John 1:9
We light these candles as a sign of the
coming light of Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being through him, and without him not one
thing came into being – John 1:1-3a
CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE: Candle Carol

Second time: All

*OPENING HYMN
NO. 8 Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates
*PRAYER OF
CONFESSION
Rev. Erin Angel, Liturgist
God of justice and
mercy, hear us as we confess our sin. We want justice for others but
mercy for ourselves. We don’t like to hear that we must repent. We
think we have repented enough. Forgive our selfishness and our
unwillingness to see our own sins. Help us to hear your call. Open
our hearts to your love and guidance. Show us the straight and
narrow path that leads to righteousness and eternal life. In
Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
*RESPONSE:
HYMN NO. 572 Lord Have Mercy Upon Us
*ASSURANCE OF
PARDON (from Luke 1)
By God’s tender mercy
the dawn will break in upon us.
Light will be given
to those who now sit in darkness.
The prophet will give
God’s people knowledge of salvation.
And guide our feet along the way
of peace. Amen.

Patri, P. 579

ANTHEM Blest Be the
King Peter Mathews
Blest be the King
whose coming is in the name of God!
For him let doors be
opened, no hearts against him barred!
Not robed in royal
splendor, in pow’r and pomp comes he:
But clad as are the
poorest–such his humility!
Blest be the King
whose coming is in the name of God!
By those who truly
listen his voice is truly heard.
Pity the proud and
haughty, who have not learned to heed
The Christ who is the
Promise and has our ransom paid.
Blest be the King
whose coming is in the name of God!
He only to the humble
reveals the face of God.
All pow’r is his, all
glory! All things are in his hand,
All ages and all
peoples, till time itself shall end.
Blest be the King
whose coming is in the name of God!
He offers to the
burdened the rest and grace they need.
Gentle is he and
humble! And light his yoke shall be,
For he would have us
bear it so he can make us free!
*Doxology
Praise God, from whom all
blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly
host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION
THE
SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION
INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE
tHE COMMUNION PRAYER
AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art
in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever. Amen.
the sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
Hymnal, P. 581
Holy, holy, holy
Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth
are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the
highest. Hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
SHARING THE BREAD AND CUP
It is the practice of
this congregation to partake individually of the bread and to hold
the cup in order to partake of it as a community. By so doing, we
affirm that Holy Communion has meaning to us both as individuals and
as a community of believers.
