CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 61 and Luke 4)

The Spirit of the Lord is upon us and we are anointed.

We bring good news to the poor, and release to captives.

We bring sight to the blind and freedom to the oppressed.

We proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Amen.

*OPENING HYMN NO. 461                    God Is Here!

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty and most loving God, your love is patient but we are often irritable. Your love is kind but we are often hostile. Your love is not jealous but we are often envious of others. Your love is not boastful but we often try to inflate our own images at the expense of others. Forgive us when we fall short of your love. Help us to put our selfishness behind us and follow in the footsteps of your precious Son. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572      Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from 1 Corinthians 13)

Love is patient and kind, never boastful or rude.

Love is not irritable or resentful and it rejoices in the truth.

Love bears all things, hopes all things and endures all things.

            Faith, hope and love abide; and the greatest of these is love.

 *Gloria Patri, P. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

            As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
