CALL TO WORSHIP                                                                                                 Rev. Dick Neil

Let your lives witness to Christ’s love,

And may your words bring reconciliation.

Let your thoughts be of peace

And our touch bring healing.

Let your actions count for justice,

And may our faith be a sign of hope.

Let our time of worship here and now be a true blessing for us all and restore joy and praise to our lives.

*OPENING HYMN            There Is Now A New Creation (see insert)

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Like the prodigal son, we have each left our Father and pursued our own way.  Let us, also like the prodigal, return to God and confess our sin.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, you love us with a profound, outrageous love, and your generously give to us all that you have.  Yet we fail to appreciate you or to respond in gratitude to your love.  Like the younger brother, we stubbornly choose our selfish ambition rather than receive your wise council.  We pursue the pleasures of this world, believing that they will make us happy, only to discover that we’re left with poverty of both soul and spirit.  Or, like the elder brother, we hold ourselves aloof and apart, judging others and withholding compassion and mercy.  Neither of these brothers understood that their truest treasure lay in their relationship with the Father – and that is our sin as well.  We ask for your forgiveness and your grace, merciful God, for the sake of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572      Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Yet while we are still far off, the Father sees us and is filled with compassion.

He runs toward us to put his arms around us and give us the kiss of welcome and grace.

Friends, believe the good news: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Amen.

*Gloria Patri, P. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

                                                             Text: Psalm 51:10-13

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
