A Service for the Lord’s Day

5th Sunday in Lent                                                                                                       March 21, 2010, 11:00 a.m.

* Indicates that those who are able may stand.                                              Bold type is spoken by the people.

Entire Service

A THOUGHT FROM JOHN CALVIN: “When Christ says, the poor will always be with us, we can learn a profitable doctrine; that offerings, by which the poor are relieved, are sacrifices acceptable and of sweet savor to God.”

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

VOLUNTARY                                          The Costly Gift                                         Richard Proulx

*CALL TO WORSHIP (from Isaiah 43)                                                        Mike Birdwell, Liturgist

The Lord is the holy One of Israel, our creator and our king.

We are precious and much loved in the sight of the Lord.

The Lord is about to do a new thing, and we will perceive it.

We, God’s people, will declare our praises before the Lord.

*OPENING HYMN NO. 483 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, you have loved us with an extravagant love but we have refused to be moved to love others in the same way. We often waste the blessings you have bestowed upon us; our time, our talent and our treasure. We place too much importance on the things of the world that don’t really matter; things that moths eat, rust destroys and thieves steal. Forgive us when we fail to put you first in our lives. Help us to realize that everything is trash compared to your extravagant love, and strengthen us to live our lives in joyful obedience to your call. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572      Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from Isaiah 43)

We have burdened the Lord with our sins.

We have wearied the Lord with our iniquities.

Yet the Lord says, I will blot out your transgressions.

The Lord says, I will remember your sins no more.

*Gloria Patri, P. 579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

ANTHEM                                        My Song Is Love Unknown                              Edwin T. Childs

                                                  Text: Samuel Crossman (1624-1683)

My song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me,

Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be.

Oh, who am I, that for my sake

My Lord should take frail flesh and die?

Sometimes they strew his way and his sweet praises sing;

Resounding all the day Hosannas to their king.

Then “Crucify” is all their breath,

And for his death they thirst and cry.

Why, what has my Lord done to cause this rage and spite?

He made the lame to run, and gave the blind their sight.

What injuries! Yet these are why

The Lord most high so cruelly dies.

Here might I stay and sing of him my soul adores.

Never was love, dear king, never was grief like yours!

This is my friend in whose sweet praise

I all my days could gladly spend.
