Anthems

Winter 2009 | Spring 2009 | Summer 2009 | Fall 2009

March 15th 2009

ANTHEM             “Anthem: Ave Verum”                         Edward Elgar
                    Gary Lovellette, tenor                T. Wes Moore, conductor

Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine;

Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine:

Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine:

Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.

O clemens, O pie, O dulcis Jesu, fili Mariae.

Jesus, Word of God incarnate, born of the virgin Mary,

On the cross your sacred body was crucified for all of us.

Cleanse us by the blood and water streaming from your pierced side;

Feed us with your body now, and in our time of death.

O gentle, O pious, O sweet Jesus, son of Mary.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM                  “A Lenten Walk”                                         Hal H. Hopson

                                  Virginia Lovellette, soprano      Chelsea Holland, alto

                                  Jonathan Holland, timpano        T. Wes Moore, handbell

Jesus walked this lonesome valley, he had to walk it by himself;

Oh, nobody else could walk it for him, he had to walk it by himself.

We must walk this lonesome valley, we have to walk it by ourselves;

Oh, nobody else can walk it for us, we have to walk it by ourselves.

Jesus bore the cross of sorrow; he had to bear it by himself;

Oh, nobody else could bear it for him, he had to bear it by himself.

We must take our cross and follow, yes we must follow by ourselves;

Oh, nobody else can follow for us, we have to follow by ourselves.

ANTHEM                                        “There Is A Balm In Gilead”                            William L. Dawson

                                                           T. Wes Moore, baritone

There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole,

There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul.

Some times I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain,

But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.

If you cannot sing like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul,

You can tell the love of Jesus, and say “He died for all.”

VOLUNTARY            "Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!”                  John Purifoy
                               Roger Martin, flute            Paul Thurmond, Organist

ANTHEM                   “With Wings as Eagles”          Donald McCullough
                                                                    Virginia Lovellette, soprano

Have you not known? Have you not heard? That the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth neither faints, nor grows weary: He gives pow’r to the weak, and to them who have no might he increases their strength! And they that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength; They will mount up with wings as eagles! They will run and not be weary; They will walk and not faint. O rest in the Lord. Wait patiently for him, and he will give you your heart’s desire!
