*CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm 62) Rick Woods, Liturgist
For God alone my soul waits; my hope is in the Lord.
God is our rock and our salvation, we will never be shaken.
Trust in God always; pour out your hearts to the Lord.
Our trust is in the Lord; we worship God’s holy name.
*OPENING HYMN NO. 464 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of compassion and mercy, hear us as we confess our sinfulness. Your Son preaches repentance, but we do not listen to his call. We hear the call to forgive, but we choose to ignore it. You proclaim a new day, but we hold on to the past. You call us to obedience, but our actions betray us. Forgive us, and help us to turn from evil. By your grace renew us and cleanse us from sin. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
*RESPONSE: HYMN NO. 572 Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (adapted from Psalm 62)
For God alone my soul waits; my hope is in the Lord.
God is our rock and our salvation, we will never be shaken.
On God alone rests our deliverance and our salvation.
God is our mighty rock and our refuge always.
*GLORIA PATRI, P. 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
SCRIPTURE READING Jonah 3:1-10 (OT p811)
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM Rise, Shine! Dale Wood
The congregation is invited to join on the final stanza.
Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered
Our human story; God in him is centered.
He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded, with grace unbounded.
See how he sends the pow’rs of evil reeling;
He brings us freedom, light and life and healing.
All men and women, who by guilt are driven, now are forgiven.
Come, celebrate; your banners high unfurling,
Your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling.
To all the world go out and tell the story of Jesus’ glory.
